Fun Facts
- âHungarosaurus was named and described in 2005 by Hungarian paleontologist Attila Osi, making it one of the most recently named European ankylosaurs.
- âThe fossils were found in the Csehbanya Formation in the Bakony Mountains, a region of western Hungary that was a series of tropical islands during the Late Cretaceous, not a connected landmass.
- âBecause Hungarosaurus lived on what was essentially an island, it may have evolved in isolation from other ankylosaurs, which could explain why it looks slightly different from its relatives in North America and Asia.
- âHungarosaurus is classified as a nodosaurid, meaning it had NO tail club unlike the famous club-tailed ankylosaurids. Its defense was pure armor, not a weapon.
- âMultiple individuals of Hungarosaurus have been found, giving scientists enough bones to make it the single most complete ankylosaur known from the entire Cretaceous period of Europe.
