Fun Facts

  • Haikouichthys is approximately 518 million years old, making it one of the two or three oldest vertebrate animals ever found in the fossil record.
  • The fossils were discovered in the Chengjiang fossil beds, a UNESCO World Heritage Site so packed with Cambrian life that scientists call it one of the most important fossil deposits on Earth.
  • Haikouichthys was only about 2.5 centimeters long, roughly the size of a large paperclip, yet it possessed a notochord that represents the evolutionary foundation of every vertebrate skeleton that ever existed.
  • In 1999, paleontologist D-G. Shu and his team announced Haikouichthys alongside its close cousin Myllokunmingia, and the scientific world was stunned: for the first time there was hard fossil evidence that vertebrates existed during the Cambrian Explosion.
  • Because Haikouichthys had no jaw and no true bones, just a stiffening rod called a notochord, it bridges the gap between invertebrates like worms and the true bony fish that would eventually evolve into sharks, frogs, dinosaurs, and humans.
