Fun Facts

  • ✓Epidexipteryx is the oldest dinosaur ever found with ornamental feathers. Its four ribbon-like tail plumes from 161 million years ago predate the famous Archaeopteryx fossil by roughly 10 million years.
  • ✓Only one Epidexipteryx fossil has ever been discovered. The entire species is known from a single specimen, cataloged as IVPP V 15471 and stored at the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology in Beijing.
  • ✓The four ribbon tail feathers of Epidexipteryx had absolutely no flight capability. Unlike modern bird feathers, they lacked the interlocked barb structure needed to generate lift, making them purely decorative showpieces.
  • ✓Epidexipteryx belonged to Scansoriopterygidae, a bizarre family of tree-climbing dinosaurs that represents a complete evolutionary dead end: they left no descendants and no living relatives whatsoever.
  • ✓When its description was published in the journal Nature in 2008, scientists worldwide immediately recognized Epidexipteryx as a landmark find because it proved ornamental feathers evolved in dinosaurs far earlier than anyone had previously suspected.
