Fun Facts
- âAll five known Brachyceratops specimens collected by Charles Gilmore in 1913 were juveniles, meaning paleontologists have never confirmed what a fully grown adult of this species actually looked like.
- âIn 2010, one of the specimens originally classified as Brachyceratops was officially re-identified as a completely different dinosaur called Rubeosaurus ovatus, shrinking the known fossil collection even further.
- âBrachyceratops was found in Montana's Two Medicine Formation in 1913, a fossil-rich rock layer that has also produced Maiasaura, famous for being the first dinosaur found with evidence of parental care.
- âBecause all known fossils are from young animals, scientists cannot be sure if the short horns that gave Brachyceratops its name were a permanent feature or just a juvenile trait that would have grown longer with age.
- âBrachyceratops is officially listed as a 'dubious genus' in paleontology, meaning scientists are not fully confident it is truly a unique species and not just the juvenile form of another ceratopsian dinosaur.
