Fun Facts
- âOne Centrosaurus bone bed in Dinosaur Provincial Park, Alberta, spans an area larger than a football field and holds the bones of at least 100 individual animals all mixed together.
- âBecause fossils of Centrosaurus have been found at every growth stage from hatchling to adult, scientists can trace exactly how the horn and frill changed shape as the animal grew from a baby into a full-grown 3-ton giant.
- âLawrence Lambe, the Canadian paleontologist who named Centrosaurus in 1904, was working for the Geological Survey of Canada and discovered several dinosaur species along the Red Deer River in a region now called the Alberta Badlands.
- âThe frill of Centrosaurus was not solid bone: it had two large openings called fenestrae, which made it lighter and may have allowed blood vessels to show through skin, possibly flushing the frill with color for display.
- âCentrosaurus gave its name to an entire dinosaur subfamily, Centrosaurinae, which includes Styracosaurus, Pachyrhinosaurus, and Einiosaurus, making it the anchor species for one of the most diverse horned dinosaur lineages in history.
