Fun Facts
- âZarafasaura was formally described in 2011 from fossils found in the phosphate-rich Ouled Abdoun Basin of Morocco, one of the most productive Late Cretaceous marine fossil sites in all of Africa.
- âAt only about 3 to 4 metres long, Zarafasaura was one of the smaller members of Elasmosauridae, a family where giants like Elasmosaurus could reach 14 metres, making it a true runt of the plesiosaur litter.
- âThe Ouled Abdoun Basin where Zarafasaura was found is mined commercially for phosphate, and many important fossil discoveries there have come not from scientific expeditions but from mining workers who spotted bones in the rock.
- âZarafasaura is named after the Arabic word for giraffe because its long neck relative to its body is reminiscent of the giraffe's most famous feature, making it one of the few prehistoric reptiles with a name that connects Africa's ancient and modern wildlife.
- âZarafasaura lived at precisely 66 million years ago, the very boundary of the Cretaceous and Paleogene periods, meaning it was alive during the mass extinction event that ended the age of dinosaurs and wiped out all non-avian dinosaurs and all plesiosaurs in one catastrophic event.
