Fun Facts

  • Xenotarsosaurus roamed Patagonia 89.8 million years ago, more than 20 million years before T. rex even evolved, making it one of South America's earliest confirmed large abelisaurid predators on record.
  • The species name 'bonapartei' honors Dr. José Bonaparte, the Argentine paleontologist who personally described dozens of dinosaur species across Patagonia and is considered one of the greatest dinosaur hunters in South American history.
  • Scientists formally described Xenotarsosaurus in 1986 from only a handful of fossils including partial vertebrae and hindlimb bones, yet those ankle bones alone were distinctive enough to establish an entirely new genus.
  • Abelisaurids like Xenotarsosaurus belong to the group with some of the most reduced forelimbs in dinosaur history: their later relative Carnotaurus had arms so tiny and non-functional that T. rex would look impressively long-armed by comparison.
  • When Xenotarsosaurus was alive, Patagonia was far warmer than today, with subtropical forests and river floodplains teeming with giant titanosaur sauropods that may have been this predator's primary prey.
