Fun Facts

  • Wukongopterus was named in 2010 by Chinese paleontologist Lü Junchang, who named it after Sun Wukong, the Monkey King hero of the 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West.
  • Its fossils come from the Tiaojishan Formation in Liaoning Province, the same region of China famous for producing feathered dinosaurs and some of the best-preserved Jurassic fossils on Earth.
  • Wukongopterus had BOTH a long neck and a long tail simultaneously, which was extremely rare among pterosaurs. Most pterosaurs either had one or the other, not both.
  • At roughly 152 million years old, Wukongopterus lived during the same general time period as some early bird ancestors, meaning it shared Jurassic skies with creatures on the very edge of avian evolution.
  • Wukongopterus gives its name to an entire family of pterosaurs called Wukongopteridae, making this single Chinese fossil a cornerstone species for understanding a whole group of ancient flyers.
