Fun Facts
- âWuerhosaurus is one of the youngest stegosaurs ever discovered, surviving into the Early Cretaceous around 130 million years ago when most of its relatives had already disappeared from the fossil record.
- âThe back plates of Wuerhosaurus may have been wider, lower, and more rounded than those of its famous cousin Stegosaurus, which has led scientists to debate whether they were used for display, temperature regulation, or both.
- âWuerhosaurus was named in 1973 by Chinese paleontologist Dong Zhiming, one of China's most celebrated fossil hunters who also named dozens of other Chinese dinosaurs.
- âA second species, Wuerhosaurus ordosensis, was named in 1993 from the Ordos region of Inner Mongolia, showing that this late-surviving stegosaur had a surprisingly wide range across northern China.
- âAlongside Mongolostegus and Yanbeilong, Wuerhosaurus holds the record for being among the very last stegosaurs on Earth, a group that dominated the Jurassic but nearly vanished before the Cretaceous even hit its midpoint.
