Fun Facts
- âSegnosaurus was named in 1979 by Mongolian paleontologist Altangerel Perle, and its species name 'galbinensis' refers specifically to the Galbin region of southeastern Mongolia where the fossils were found.
- âDespite being a theropod dinosaur, the same broad group that includes T. rex and Velociraptor, Segnosaurus was a plant-eater with a wide pelvis that actually looked more like a sauropod's hip than a typical meat-eating theropod's.
- âSegnosaurus was so anatomically bizarre when first discovered that scientists argued for decades about where it even belonged in the dinosaur family tree, with some researchers initially placing it in its own completely separate dinosaur group called Segnosauria.
- âIn 2025, fossil remains from Japan that had originally been assigned to the carnivore Allosaurus were reassigned to Segnosaurus, meaning this Mongolian plant-eater now has confirmed fossil records stretching all the way to the Japanese archipelago.
- âSegnosaurus belongs to the therizinosaur family, whose members are famous for having some of the longest claws of any land animal in Earth's history, with Therizinosaurus claws reaching over 3 feet long in related species.
