Fun Facts
- âRhabdodon lived on what scientists call Hateg Island and connected landmasses, ancient European islands cut off from Asia and North America by shallow seas, which forced it to evolve independently for millions of years.
- âIts teeth were shaped like rods or pegs with ridges, a design so distinctive that when Philippe Matheron first found them in 1869 in southern France, he named the whole animal after the tooth shape alone.
- âRomania has produced some of the richest Rhabdodon-related fossil sites in Europe, and Romanian paleontologist Franz Nopcsa was one of the first scientists to study island dinosaur evolution using these fossils in the early 1900s.
- âRhabdodon was once lumped into a now-discredited group called hypsilophodonts, but modern analysis confirmed it belongs to Iguanodontia, making it a distant relative of the famous Iguanodon.
- âSome Rhabdodon specimens hint at individuals reaching up to 6 meters (20 feet) long, which would make it one of the largest plant-eating dinosaurs ever found in Late Cretaceous Europe.
