Fun Facts
- âP. sandersi's wingspan of up to 24 feet (7.3 m) beats the wandering albatross record of 11.5 feet by more than double, making it the widest wingspan of any bird ever confirmed by science.
- âPelagornis had teeth, but they were not real teeth. They were sharp bony spikes that grew directly from the jawbone, earning the whole group the name pseudotooth birds, or Odontopterygiformes.
- âThe fossil that revealed P. sandersi was discovered in 1983 by a museum worker digging at the Charleston, South Carolina airport during construction, and sat in storage for decades before scientists realized what they had.
- âComputer modeling published in 2014 by researcher Daniel Ksepka showed that P. sandersi could only take off by running downhill or catching a strong headwind, much like a hang glider needing a hill.
- âPelagornis survived for over 35 million years, appearing in the fossil record around 37.7 million years ago and persisting all the way to the Early Pleistocene at around 2.58 million years ago, outlasting many entire dinosaur lineages in sheer time.
