Fun Facts
- âThe only known Ornitholestes skeleton was discovered in 1900 at Bone Cabin Quarry in Wyoming, a site named after an actual shepherd's cabin built from dinosaur bones.
- âHenry Fairfield Osborn formally named Ornitholestes in 1903, the same scientist who later named Tyrannosaurus rex in 1905, making him one of the most prolific dinosaur namers in history.
- âEarly reconstructions of Ornitholestes gave it a small horn on its nose, but later analysis of the single known skull showed the bump was just a crushed and distorted part of the nasal bone, not a real horn.
- âOrnitholestes lived alongside giants like Brachiosaurus, Diplodocus, and Allosaurus in the Morrison Formation ecosystem, yet at only 6.5 feet long it was one of the smallest predators in that entire food web.
- âSome scientists have proposed that Ornitholestes may have been feathered, since it belongs to Coelurosauria, the same broad group that includes all feathered dinosaurs and eventually birds themselves.
