Fun Facts
- âMontanoceratops lived just 4 million years before the asteroid impact that wiped out all non-bird dinosaurs, making it one of the last ceratopsians to ever walk the Earth.
- âDespite being related to Triceratops, Montanoceratops was only about the size of a large dog when measured by height, standing far shorter than its three-horned cousin which could reach 9 feet tall at the hip.
- âThe original fossils of Montanoceratops were collected by the legendary paleontologist Barnum Brown in 1914, but the animal was not formally named and described until 1951, meaning it waited 37 years in museum storage to get its official name.
- âMontanoceratops belongs to the family Leptoceratopsidae, a group of small, primitive horned dinosaurs that retained features from much earlier ceratopsians, essentially serving as a living link between the tiny Psittacosaurus and the giant Triceratops lineage.
- âFossils of Montanoceratops have been found on both sides of the U.S.-Canada border, in Montana and Alberta, suggesting this small dinosaur roamed a wide stretch of the ancient landmass called Laramidia.
