Fun Facts
- âMeganeura's wingspan reached up to 75 centimeters, making it larger than many modern birds and the biggest flying insect in the entire fossil record.
- âScientists believe Meganeura could grow so large because the Carboniferous atmosphere contained roughly 35 percent oxygen compared to today's 21 percent, allowing insects to absorb enough oxygen through their bodies to power enormous size.
- âThe first Meganeura fossil was discovered in a coal mine near Commentry, France in 1880 and formally described by French paleontologist Charles Brongniart in 1885.
- âMeganeura was almost certainly an active aerial predator, likely snatching other large insects and possibly small amphibians right out of the air, much like modern dragonflies hunt mosquitoes today.
- âFor decades after its discovery, many scientists refused to believe an insect could grow that large, and the find was controversial until more complete specimens confirmed its extraordinary dimensions.
