Fun Facts

  • ✓Jeholopterus was formally described in 2002 by Wang Xiaolin, Alexander Kellner, and colleagues based on a nearly complete skeleton found in the Daohugou Beds, one of the richest Jurassic fossil sites in the world.
  • ✓Its family, Anurognathidae, gets its name from Greek and Latin roots meaning 'without tail jaw,' because these pterosaurs had unusually short tails compared to most of their relatives.
  • ✓In 2008, paleontologist David Peters controversially suggested Jeholopterus was an ectoparasite that fed on dinosaur blood, pointing to its specialized claws and short face, but most scientists today reject this idea and think it was simply an insect hunter.
  • ✓The Daohugou fossil bed where Jeholopterus was found also preserved exquisite specimens of early feathered dinosaurs, salamanders, and early mammals, giving scientists a stunning window into the Middle Jurassic ecosystem of Asia.
  • ✓Jeholopterus had a covering of pycnofibers, a fuzzy coat similar to hair, which suggests it may have been warm-blooded and able to regulate its own body temperature, a trait more like a bat or bird than a reptile.
