Fun Facts
- âIchthyornis was one of the first ancient birds ever described by science, named by the famous fossil hunter O.C. Marsh in 1872, just 13 years after Darwin published On the Origin of Species.
- âCharles Darwin himself called Ichthyornis one of the most important fossil discoveries ever made, because it was a perfect missing link showing birds evolving from dinosaurs.
- âA landmark 2018 study led by Yale paleontologist Daniel Field used CT scans to show that Ichthyornis had a powerful snapping beak tip like a modern bird, with teeth only at the back of its jaws, meaning it had already partly evolved the modern bird beak shape.
- âIchthyornis lived above the Western Interior Seaway, a shallow sea that split North America completely in two from north to south during the Late Cretaceous, and it likely hunted fish from the air just like modern terns do today.
- âOver 50 individual Ichthyornis specimens have been found, making it one of the best-known ancient birds from the age of dinosaurs and giving scientists a rare detailed picture of early avian evolution.
