Fun Facts
- âHenodus is the ONLY placodont ever discovered in freshwater rock layers. Every single one of its roughly 25 known relatives lived in shallow marine seas, making Henodus a genuine evolutionary oddball.
- âIts shell was not inherited from turtles. Henodus evolved its turtle-like armor completely independently, a stunning example of convergent evolution happening about 230 million years ago.
- âThe Grabfeld Formation where Henodus was found in Tubingen, Germany, preserves evidence of ancient brackish lagoons, suggesting Henodus lived in murky, semi-salty water very different from the open ocean.
- âDespite looking like a plant eater with its beak, scientists debate exactly what Henodus ate. Its flat jaws may have been used to crush hard-shelled invertebrates like clams, or to scrape up algae and aquatic vegetation.
- âHenodus was formally named and described in 1936 by the German paleontologist Friedrich von Huene, one of the most prolific dinosaur and reptile researchers of the 20th century, who named dozens of prehistoric species.
