Fun Facts
- ✓Europasaurus was only about 6 meters long and weighed around 800 kg, making it one of the smallest sauropods ever found, even though it was closely related to Brachiosaurus, which reached 26 meters and weighed up to 60 tonnes.
- ✓Scientists proved Europasaurus was a fully grown adult, not a baby, by slicing its bones paper-thin and examining annual growth rings under a microscope, the same way you age a tree, and the rings showed full maturity.
- ✓More than 11 individual Europasaurus specimens have been recovered from the Langenberg quarry in Germany, including hatchlings, juveniles, and adults, giving scientists a rare complete growth record for any sauropod species.
- ✓The island where Europasaurus lived was part of what geologists call the European Archipelago, a chain of tropical islands in a warm shallow sea that covered most of central Europe 149 million years ago.
- ✓Europasaurus was formally named in 2006 in the journal Nature, nearly a decade after amateur fossil hunter Holger Lüdtke first spotted the bones in a limestone quarry wall near Goslar in Lower Saxony, Germany.
