Fun Facts
- âDicraeosaurus was excavated from the Tendaguru fossil site in Tanzania during the German Tendaguru Expedition of 1909-1913, one of the largest dinosaur digs in history, which shipped over 225 tons of fossil material back to Berlin.
- âUnlike its giant cousin Diplodocus, Dicraeosaurus was a relatively compact sauropod at about 40 feet long, making it one of the smaller members of the diplodocoid family tree.
- âThe spectacular forked spines on its vertebrae may have supported a fleshy crest or sail along the neck and back, possibly used for species recognition, temperature regulation, or display to rivals and mates.
- âDicraeosaurus fossils span roughly 11 million years of geological time, from about 154.8 to 143.1 million years ago, meaning this dinosaur was a long-running success story through the Late Jurassic.
- âThe Natural History Museum in Berlin houses the original Dicraeosaurus skeleton, assembled from fossils collected in Tanzania over a century ago, and it remains one of the most complete diplodocoid specimens from Africa.
