Fun Facts
- âAngaturama was named in 1996 in the same scientific paper as Irritator, and both were described from skulls found in the exact same rock formation in Brazil, leading many scientists to suspect they are actually the same species.
- âThe only known fossil of Angaturama is the front portion of a skull, called the premaxilla and anterior snout region, yet that single fragment was enough for scientists to formally name a brand new dinosaur genus.
- âAngaturama's name comes from the Tupi people, the indigenous inhabitants of Brazil, making it one of the few dinosaurs named to honor a living indigenous language and cultural heritage rather than a Latin or Greek root.
- âThe Romualdo Formation where Angaturama was found is world-famous for producing exceptionally preserved three-dimensional fossils inside limestone nodules called concretions, which protected bones from being crushed flat over 113 million years.
- âIf Angaturama and Irritator are truly the same animal, it would be classified as a junior synonym, meaning the name Angaturama would officially disappear from science because Irritator was published first in the same 1996 paper.
