Fun Facts
- âThe original Aegyptosaurus fossils, collected between 1911 and 1914, were destroyed on the night of April 24-25, 1944, when Allied bombers struck the Alte Akademie building in Munich where they were stored, making this one of paleontology's greatest wartime losses.
- âAegyptosaurus lived alongside Spinosaurus, Carcharodontosaurus, and the giant crocodilian Sarcosuchus in the Bahariya Oasis ecosystem, making it one of the most dangerous neighborhoods any dinosaur ever called home.
- âThe species name baharijensis refers directly to Bahariya, the remote Egyptian oasis depression where the fossils were found, located about 370 kilometers southwest of Cairo.
- âGerman paleontologist Ernst Stromer spent years fighting Egyptian bureaucracy and World War I to get his fossils back to Munich, only to have them destroyed 30 years later in a war he had opposed.
- âBecause the original bones are gone, scientists in the 1990s and 2000s had to re-examine the Bahariya sites to find new fragments, and Josh Smith's 2001 expedition recovered additional titanosaur material that helped scientists better understand what Aegyptosaurus looked like.
