Fun Facts
- âYinlong was described scientifically in 2006 by paleontologist Xu Xing, and its discovery instantly pushed the origin of the horned dinosaur lineage back by roughly 20 million years compared to what scientists previously believed.
- âDespite being the ancestor of giants like Triceratops, Yinlong was tiny, roughly 1.2 meters long and likely weighed no more than 15 kilograms, meaning a fully grown Triceratops outweighed it by more than 1,300 times.
- âYinlong was found in the Shishugou Formation of Xinjiang, China, the same fossil-rich rock layer that produced Guanlong, a primitive tyrannosaur, meaning this little plant-eater shared its world with an early relative of T. rex.
- âYinlong possessed a small rostral bone at the very tip of its upper jaw, a defining feature of all ceratopsians, making this tiny bone one of the most important clues linking it to later giants like Triceratops and Styracosaurus.
- âThe name Yinlong was partly inspired by the 2000 film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which was filmed near the region in China where the fossil was eventually recovered, making it one of the few dinosaurs with a pop culture nod baked right into its name.
