Fun Facts
- âTrilobites had eyes made of calcite, the same mineral found in limestone and chalk. Some species had up to 15,000 individual lenses in a single eye, giving them nearly 360-degree vision that no predator could sneak up on.
- âWhen threatened, many trilobites could roll into a perfect ball like a modern pill bug, tucking their soft belly parts safely inside their hard exoskeleton. Fossils found curled up this way are called 'enrolled' trilobites, and scientists believe it was a deliberate defense move.
- âThe largest trilobite ever found was Isotelus rex, discovered in 1998 near Churchill, Manitoba, Canada. It measured a whopping 28 inches (72 cm) long, making it bigger than most house cats.
- âOver 22,000 species of trilobites have been formally described by scientists, making them one of the most diverse animal groups in Earth's entire fossil record. New species are still being discovered today at a rate of several hundred per year.
- âTrilobites were the first animals known to have evolved complex eyes. Their optical system was so efficient that modern engineers have actually studied trilobite eye structure to improve camera and lens design used in photography and microscopy today.
