Fun Facts

  • Suchomimus had a skull nearly 4 feet (1.2 m) long, almost exactly the height of a typical 7-year-old child, packed with more than 100 cone-shaped teeth that interlocked like a cage.
  • Its closest relative, Baryonyx, was found in a clay pit in Surrey, England in 1983 with fish scales still fossilized inside its stomach: direct proof that spinosaurids really did eat fish.
  • Paul Sereno's team discovered Suchomimus in 1997 in the Ténéré Desert, one of Earth's most hostile environments, where summer temperatures can top 120 degrees Fahrenheit (49 degrees Celsius).
  • Suchomimus had elongated neural spines along its backbone forming a low ridge or hump, a feature shared with its famous cousin Spinosaurus, which had a full sail that may have stood more than 5 feet tall.
  • The Elrhaz Formation where Suchomimus was found also contained Sarcosuchus, a 40-foot crocodilian nicknamed SuperCroc, lungfish nearly 6 feet long, and freshwater sharks, making it one of the richest prehistoric ecosystems ever discovered in Africa.
