Fun Facts
- âHarry Seeley first formally divided all dinosaurs into Saurischia and Ornithischia in a paper published in 1887 and presented to the Royal Society of London, and that two-way split is still used by paleontologists today.
- âDespite being called lizard-hipped, Saurischian dinosaurs actually gave rise to birds, while the bird-hipped Ornithischians left no living descendants at all, making the naming deeply ironic.
- âThe largest land animals that ever lived, the titanosaur sauropods like Patagotitan mayorum estimated at up to 76 tons, were Saurischians, and so was the fastest large bipedal predator, Tyrannosaurus rex.
- âIn Saurischians, the pubis bone in the hip points forward and downward, which is the same arrangement seen in modern lizards, which is exactly why Seeley gave them the lizard-hip name back in the 1880s.
- âA 2017 study published in Nature by Matthew Baron and colleagues shook the entire field by suggesting Saurischia might not even be a natural group, proposing instead that theropods are closer to Ornithischians, though most paleontologists still support the traditional split.
