Fun Facts

  • Saltasaurus was the very first sauropod dinosaur ever confirmed to have bony armor plates called osteoderms in its skin, a discovery announced in 1980 that shocked paleontologists who assumed only small dinosaurs needed armor.
  • Despite being described as 'small for a sauropod,' Saltasaurus still weighed around 7 tons, roughly equal to two full-grown African bull elephants standing side by side.
  • A remarkable nesting site discovered in Auca Mahuevo, Patagonia in the late 1990s revealed hundreds of titanosaur eggs the size of softballs, some containing fossilized embryo skin that showed the same osteoderm pattern seen in adult Saltasaurus relatives.
  • The osteoderms of Saltasaurus came in two sizes: large oval plates up to 4 inches (10 cm) across that may have acted like shields, and thousands of tiny pea-sized nodules packed in between them like cobblestone paving.
  • Saltasaurus lived right up to the very end of the Cretaceous period, meaning it was among the last dinosaurs alive on Earth before the asteroid impact 66 million years ago wiped out non-avian dinosaurs entirely.
