Fun Facts
- âAt least seven to nine Mapusaurus individuals of different ages, from juveniles to fully grown adults, were found jumbled together in a single bonebed excavated between 1997 and 2001, making it one of the most remarkable carnivore bonebeds ever discovered.
- âMapusaurus was named in 2006 by paleontologists Rodolfo Coria and Philip J. Currie, and the species name 'roseae' honors both the rose-pink color of the rock in which the fossils were buried and Rose Letwin, a Canadian sponsor who helped fund the expedition.
- âMapusaurus belongs to Carcharodontosauridae, a family named after the great white shark because their teeth share the same triangular, serrated blade shape. The family name literally means 'shark-toothed lizards.'
- âThe Huincul Formation where Mapusaurus was found also yielded Argentinosaurus, one of the largest dinosaurs ever, which may have been Mapusaurus's prey. Some scientists suggest only coordinated group hunting could have brought down something that enormous.
- âMapusaurus lived about 89 to 98 million years ago, which means it roamed Patagonia roughly 25 million years before T. rex even evolved. In the world of giant predators, Mapusaurus was ancient history by the time T. rex showed up.
